Real Estate Regulator Bill
On 10 March, the Rajya Sabha has passed the Real Estate Regulator Bill. The Bill was approved by legislators across all parties. The Bill will secure the interests of homebuyers and developers in equal measure and remove corruption and inefficiency from the sector. The bill is seek as a landmark as real estate contributes nine per cent to the national GDP. The first draft of the bill was rejected by Rajya Sabha in 2015, after which 20 amendments were made.

  • Bill has a provision for imprisonment of up to 3 years in case developers are found guilty of fraud
  • It's mandatory for developers to deposit 70% money from buyers in a third-party bank account
  • Regulatory authorities have 60 days to dispose of complaints
  • Commercial Real Estate also comes under the purview of the Bill
  • Registrations of all projects in each State is now mandatory
  • The Bill prohibits developers from changing the plan unless two-thirds of the allottes have agreed to it.

On 4 December 2015, BSP chief Mayawati and Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad demanded Union Minister VK Singh be sacked for the controversial "dog analogy" he made in a reply to a question on the deaths of Dalit children in Haryana.
