Former Union Minister P.Shiv Shankar passed away on Monday morning after a prolonged illness.

Shiv Shankar (89) is survived by wife Laxmi Bai, two sons and a daughter. He was born in 1927 into a family of 11 brothers and sisters, Shiv Shankar and his elder brother were asked by their father to work as salesmen in a cloth showroom in order to financially support the large family. The two brothers were interested in studying futerh so they ran away from home and landed in Amritsar. Both of them joined Hindu College Amritsar where Shiv Shankar pursued B.A. LL.B (hons.) during day time while selling peanuts and shining shoes at Amritsar railway station in the evening and at night.

After completing law, he came back to Hyderabad and started his practice. He went on to become a Judge of the AP High Court in 1972 but resigned the post in a year. He started practicing mostly in the Supreme Court and partly in the High Court.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on hearing about his excellence in Constitutional Law requested him to handle her post-Emergency cases both in the Shaw Commission and elsewhere.
