The Central government has approved the change of contractor for the Polavaram project pill way, spill channel and stilling basin concrete work bringing down the curtains for the four-month long tussle.
Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari with officials of Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Department and representatives of the project contractors in New Delhi on Tuesday after approved it. The TDP government has set a target 2018 as the deadliner for sending water into the two main canals of the project but the prime contractor Transstroy was repeatedly failing to achieve the goal.
The State government called for fresh tenders to appoint a new contract that was objected by the Centre saying that the change of contract would escalate the project cost. After several rounds of talks, the Centre greed to for calling for fresh tenders. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said that the new contract would be given to Navayuga Engineering which had offered to take up work on the same terms as Transstroy but the government keeps on extending the last date for tenders.
According to AP Water Resources Principal Secretary Shashi Bhushan Kumar said that the new contractor would enter into an agreement directly with the State government on the existing rates.
