2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21 or CMP 11 will be held in Le Bourget, Paris from November 30 to December 11. The conference is part of global efforts to tackle climate change. The CoP21 agreement was adopted unanimously at the plenary session.


The conference is attended by US President Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, French President Francois Hollande and other world leaders.

The participants in the conference are France, Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, the UAE and the UK. These 20 countries accounts for over 80 per cent of global clean energy R&D.

Mission Innovation

On November 30, twenty countries will launch an initiative to double their clean energy research and development budget over the next five years. According to the White House, total amount of money committed for the cause under Mission innovation amount to USD 20 billion. ABout half of the amount would come from the United States.

Paris Agreement on climate change

The CoP21 agreement was unanimously accepted at the plenary session. According to the agreement, the goal is to move to a low carbon pathway to achieve "well below 2 degrees C" for temperature rise. The agreement also mentioned instituting a regime of financing of developing economies to help make the transition. The agreement will go into effect from 2020. Nations will set a binding target of well below 2 degrees for rise in temperature and will also endeavour to keep rise to 1.5 degrees. The nations will regularly provide a national inventory of greenhouse gas emissions.

Indian Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that India's concerns have been taken care of in the final climate draft of the negotiating text. He also called the agreement a balanced text and is away forward for the world.
