The AP Assembly session was marred with protests by the Opposition YSR Congress Party MLAs on the opening day of the session. The YSRCP MLAs wore black scarves in a symbolic gesture against the alleged failure of the government on all fronts.

In his speech on the opening day of the session, Governor ESL Narasimhan recalled that 31 cities had been selected under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) while Kakinada and Visakhapatnam had been selected under the smart city programme of the Central Government. Tirupati was set to be selected under the smart city programme next year and the government would spend Rs. 100 crore on development of Kurnool which would also be pitched for selection under the programme.

Meanwhile, YSR Congress has urged the Speaker Dr. Kodela Sivaprasada Rao to disqualify the eight legislators who had defected to the Telugu Desam Party. A delegation led by party’s deputy floor leader in the Assembly Jyothula Nehru met the speaker and requested to initiate action against the defected MLAs. They submitted the documentary evidences, including voice clippings of the defected MLAs to the Speaker.
