Vijayawada is a city on the banks of the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh. It is a municipal corporation and the headquarters of Vijayawada (urban) mandal in Krishna district of the state. The city is one of the suburbs of the state capital Amaravati, under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region, and the headquarters of APCRDA.

As of 2011 census, the city had a population of 1,048,240, making it the second largest city in the state in terms of population and it had an urban agglomeration population of 1,491,202.

2015 Vijayawada Liquor Tragedy case

On 7 December 2015, 5 people died after consuming spurious liquor at a bar in the city. In the evening, the police and excise officials have sealed the bar. Reacting to the incident, the government has banned four brands of liquor in the State. Officials have sent samples of the alleged contaminated liquor to Forensic Science Lab (FSL).

On 12 December 2015, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 26th conference of the Southern Zonal Council (SZC) at Vijayawada.

In December 2015, according to Google Trends, Vijayawada is the searched more than Amaravati, Vizag and Guntur on the Google search engine.
