State government amends relevant Act on DGP selection

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu made a statement on the reasons that necessitated promulgation of the AP Police (Reforms) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 in the Assembly today.

Minister for Tourism Bhuma Akhila Priya tabled the copy of the ordinance o behalf of the Chief Minister. As per the existing Act, the government would have to appoint the DGP from amongst the three senior most police officers of the department empaneled by the UPSC. Also, the DGP would hold the post for a minimum of two years of service, irrespective of the date of his retirement.

The State government amended Section 3 of the Act. Accordingly, the DGP would be selected by the State government from amongst the IPS officers in the rank of DGP on the basis of their length of service, good history of service, professional knowledge, and ability to lead the force.
