Five persons were killed and over 20 other persons were seriously ill after they consumed liquor at Bar - Swarna Bar at Krishna Lanka here today morning.
Sources said that those consumed the liquor are daily-wage laborers. Police have shifted the bodies of the deceased to hospital, while the Excise department officials have seized the bar. It is suspected that they have consumed spurious liquor at the bar.
Telugu Desam Party MLA Gadde Rammohan rushed to the spot and said that stringent action would be taken on the people responsible for the incident. He said that steps would be taken to prevent such kind of incidents in future. Meanwhile, heavy police force has been deployed at the incident spot. Improved medical aid would be extended to the victims.
Minister for Excise Kollu Ravindra said that stringent action would be taken against the culprits. He asked the district Collector and hospital authorities to extend the best possible treatment. He ordered for a probe into the incident.
The deceased were identified as Narasa Gopi and Mahesh. Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has ordered for an inquiry on the incident.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu announced an ex gratia of Rs.5 lakh each to the kin of those five died. He called on victims at Andhra Hospitals on Monday night. Speaking to media, he said that the incident is being thoroughly investigated from all angles. Whether methyl alcohol was mixed with the liquor is being looked into. Stringent action would be taken against those responsible for the tragedy. More than 34 persons have been shifted to Government Hospital where three died while undergoing treatment while two persons died on the spot. The Victims were identified as P.Gopi, Kalandhar, K.Shankar Rao, Mastan Vali and M.Mahesh. They were all natives of Nehru Nagar of Krishnalanka. Some of the victims were shifted to private hospitals for better treatment. Meanwhile, Police and Excise officials have taken some workers of the bar into custody.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) R.P.Thakur and City Police Commissioner D.Gautam Sawang visited the bar and liquor samples have been sent to Forensic Science Laboratory and the report is awaited in a couple of days.
