Sabarimala stampede – 17 devotes from the State injured

In a minor stamped at Lord Ayyappa shrine at Sabarimala, sources said that at least 17 pilgrims were injured and all of them are from Andhra Pradesh.

According to Pathnamthitta District Collector R.Girija, the minor stampede took place due to the heavy rush and a rope barricade between Sannidhanam and Mallikapura snapped and the pilgrims who were leaning on it fell on each other. The injured were immediately taken to the Sannidhanam hospital. Two of the injured seriously were shifted to Kottayam medical college hospital and three others to Pamba hospital said the District Collector. The victims are from Anatapuram, Guntur and East Godavari according to sources.

An Emergency Rescue Vehicle was pressed into service to shift those critically injured .Dr. Sureshbabu, Nodal Officer at Sabarimala said that eight pilgrims who sustained head injuries have been referred to the Government Hospital at Kottayam. The injured were from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana, he said.

Here, it may be recalled that in 2011, as many as 106 devotees were killed in a stampede on the day of Makara Jyothi.
