SIT formed to probe liquor deaths at Krishna Lanka

The Andhra Pradesh State Government has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Deputy Inspector General Mahesh Chandra Laddha to probe the deaths in the liquor tragedy of Vijayawada.

The DIG J.V.Ramudu said that Grey Hounds superintendent of Police S.Senthil Kumar to investigate the liquor tragedy here. Vijayawada City Police Commissioner D.Gautam Sawang will supervise the investigation. He said that SIT has been mandated to conduct a speedy and fair investigation. He suspected the role of an insider in adulterating the liquor and only clear picture will come only after receiving a report from Forensic Science Laboratory.

Prohibition and Excise Deputy Commissioner Y.B.Bhaskar Rao said the liquor samples of nine brands tested at the Regional Chemical Laboratory Guntur confirmed that the liquor stocks despatched were not contaminated.

It may be recalled that five persons died and another 31 were hospitalized after taking liquor at Swarna Bar and Restaurant in Krishna Lanka on December 7, 2015.

The SIT has found that eight persons including former Congress MLA Malladi Vishnu were reportedly involved in running the Bar. The Prohibition and Excise officials said the licence for Swarna Bar was issued to Bhagavatula Sarath Chandra (brother-in-law) of Malladi Vishnu, sister Kavuri Lakshmi Saraswathi, her husband Kavuri Purna Chandra Sharma and mother Balatripura Sundaramma. They said that the owner secured licence for the restaurant and bar in 2006 by paying Rs.41 lakh as fee and the permission was renewed later.

Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise said that the bar has violated the norms by setting up it in cellar of Hotel M and there is no parking lot. The restaurant and bar was situated in less space, close to a school and National Highway.
