Ruling party MPTC member attempts suicide due to crop failure and mounting debts

Nagamma, a TDP MPTC member from Mahantapuram village of Kundurpi mandal of the district attempted to commit suicide on Monday due to crop failure and mounting debts.

Nagamma and her family raised considerable amounts of money as loan from money lenders in the run-up to the MPTC elections in the hope that a win would alter their financial future for the better and bring them out of the crisis. However, with the win not leading to any betterment in family’s financial position and the crops failing year after year, the debts have increased and the money lenders and the bankers have started visiting her regularly said sources.

Police sources said that she consumed pesticide late in the night. Noticing her in an unconscious state, her family members shifted her to a primary health centre locally and then referred to government general hospital in Anantapur. Her condition is said to be serious.
