The wages of Archakas (priests) working in low or no income temples have been reduced to Rs.5,000 from the current Rs.10,000 and a decision was taken to this effect according to sources.
There were 23,834 temples in the purview of Endowments Department and 20,672 temples are under the income group of Rs.2 lakhs and below per annum. With the government’s decision, the Archakas will be deprived of the assured Rs.10,000 salary.
It may be mentioned here that the State government has constituted a corpus fund with Rs.200 crore to meet the salaries of the Archakas who are working in low/no income group temples. It is expected that over 30,000 employees including archakas working in these temples.
