Mehbooba to sworn in as Chief Minister in the early next week
Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti will sworn in as Chief Minister in the first week of April.
She met the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir N.N.Vohra at Raj Bhavan on Saturday afternoon to stake claim to form government with alliance partner BJP. She was accompanied by the BJP’s legislature party leader Dr.Nirmal Singh who has been nominated by the party as Deputy Chief Minister. The 56 year old PDP chief will be the first woman chief minister.
Speaking to press after the meeting with the Governor, she said that her priorities would be on peace, reconciliation and development of Jammu and Kashmir. ‘ I am thankful to the BJP for extending unconditional support to us in the formation of the government’, she said.
Mehbooba was born on May 22, 1959 and had her law degree from Kashmir University. She has two daughters Iltija and Irtiqa. She is the MP from Anantanag. She was MLA from Bijbehara (Congress) in 1996, leader of the Opposition, Vice-president of PDP in 1999, MLA from Pahalgam and later elected President, PDP in 2002, MP from Anantanag in 2004, MLA from Wacchi in South Kashmir in 2008 and MP from Anantanag in 2014.
