Medical negligence – Doctor fined with Rs.3 lakh

In an another incident of medical negligence, the Krishna District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum -2 here has ordered Dr. M.J.Nayudu, noted orthopedic surgeon to pay Rs.3 lakh as compensation to a women on the charges of alleged infection that developed in the hospital ICU leading to a second amputation.

Going into the details, S.Saraswathi (62) filed a complaint against doctor M.J.Nayudu of MVS Accident Hospital in Suryaraopet. She met with an accident on September 30, 2012 and was admitted to MVS Accident Hospital. She was diagnosed as having crush njury on the left foot and left humerus that required amputation of her left leg below the knee and shifted to ICU after operation. She alleged that due to negligence of the opposite party in rendering treatment, she developed infection in the stump of the amputated leg on October 11. A second operation was conducted amputating her left leg above the knee after collecting hospital charges of Rs.1.5 lakh. She alleged negligence that resulted in physical disability.

The Forum found that the opinion of the Professor and HoD, Department of Orthopaedics, Government General Hospital who said that after verifying records, necessary treatment was given to the patient is vague and there is no clarity on negligence. The Forum, accepting the claim directed the opposite party shall pay Rs.3 lakh with 12 per cent interest and in addition Rs.10,000 toward costs of the complainant.
