The Krishna Lanka police on Tuesday arrested nine persons in the liquor tragedy here in which five persons died and 29 others were hospitalized after they consumed liquor at Swarna Restaurant and Bar on Monday.
The arrested are T.Venkateswara Rao, N.Venkata Nageswar Rao, R.Malakonda Reddy , K.V.Ramana Rao , T.Venkata Raju, Banothu Sreenu, N.Durga Rao, P.Srinivasa Rao and A.Bhupati. In the FIR filed by the police late in the evening has named the first four while the others are named as accused. Five accused persons in Monday’s FIR including former Congress MLA Malladi Vishnu and some of his family members who are said to be the partners in the business were not arrested.
Police sources said that the arrested staff reportedly confessed that they mixed some chemical in the liquor served in the bar on Monday but could not name the chemical. Police are trying to find out whether it was done at with the knowledge of the owners and from where it was procured. Meanwhile, Prohibition and Excise officials have issued instructions to stop the sale of nine brands that include Original Choice, Royal Stag, Director’s Special, Old Admiral Brandy, Bagpiper, Old Tavern, McDowell No.1 Whisky, Imperial Blue and McDowell Brandy immediately.
APCC charges the government adopting vindictive attitude
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee N.Raghuveera Reddy accused the government with adopting vindictive attitude on senior Congress leader Malladi Vishnu by trying to implicate him in the spurious liquor incident. He said that it is not appropriate for the government to register cases against Malladi Vishnu as he happens to be the owner of the building in which the bar is operating. Expressing concern over the death, he demanded the government to pay ex-gratia of Rs.10 lakh each to the families of the victims and demanded to order a thorough probe into the episode.
