India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.3 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. The capital of India is New Delhi.

About two-thirds of the population live in rural India.

According to the World Health Organization, outdoor air pollution is among the top killers in India. The country has the highest rate of deaths caused by chronic respiratory diseases anywhere in the world. On 27 November 2015, the US Embassy in Delhi has recorded 999 on its custom-developed Air Quality Index.


Ban of liquor has been a demand in several parts of the country. Sale of liquor has been banned in the States of Gujarat, Nagaland, Manipur (in some parts), and Union Territory of Lakshadweep. Kerala has been banning liquor in a phased manner since August 2014.


As of 2015, India receives 0.68% of world tourists every year. The average stay of international tourists in the country is 18-20 days, said Tourism minister Mahesh Sharma. To attract more tourists to the country, India has taken various initiatives like e-tourist visa, providing financial assistance to state governments launching 12 theme based tourist circuits. In 2011-12, average foreign tourists used to stay 20-22 days.

The 12 theme based tourist circuits in the country are North-East India circuit, Buddhist circuit, Himalayan circuit, Coastal circuit, Krishna circuit, Desert circuit, Tribal circuit, Eco circuit, Wildlife circuit, Rural circuit, Spiritual circuit and Ramayana circuit.


In 2015, Facebook and WhatsApp are rated the most popular applications among Indians. As per a study conducted in December 2015, Truecaller and UC Browser also figured in the top five applications that are popular in India. The other popular apps include MX Player, Flipkart, Candy Crush, Applock and Naukri.




India exports Cotton to China, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Cotton exports have surged 35% in a year till 30 November 2015, primarily due to Pakistan doubling their orders.


26 lakh passenger vehicles and 169 lakh two-wheelers were sold in India in 2014-15.
