Monday, January 25, 2016

The Hyderabad High Court today stayed the land acquisition for Greenfield Airport. People from 12 villages have approached the High Court challenging the land acquisition notification issued by Vizianagaram District Collector. The government has issued notification for acquiring 5,315 acres of land for Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport which was opposed by the locals. The petitioners contended that when an International Airport is at a distance of 45 kms.and the government is indulging into real estate business, said the people.

Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar dealing with a batch of petitions filed by farmers directed the government not to dispossess the farmers of the lands being cultivated in the name of airport. The petitioners contended that the notification dispensed with public consultation while preparing the social impact assessment. As the ordinance lapsed, the notification failed. The judge felt that there was prima facie case and said that the farmers may not be dispossessed.

Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar made it clear that the petitioners could file their objections before the authorities and that the latter would consider the same and pass appropriate orders that were subject to final outcome of the case.
