High Court serves notice to State over Vice Chancellor appointment

Monday, February 15, 2016

A Division Bench of Hyderabad High Court comprising of acting Chief Justice Dilip Baba Saheb Bhosale and Justice P.Naveen Rao today issued noticed to the State Government and its law secretary asking them to explain their power to appoint a vice-chancellor for the Damodaram Sanjeevaiah National Law University, Visakhapatnam.

Dr.P.R.Subas Chandran, general council member of the University moved the court with a PIL contending that the State Government has no power to either appoint or to remove the vice-chancellor. As per the DSN Law University Act 2008, the Chancellor of the University is the competent authority to do this. He informed the court that the State Government has removed Prof.R.G.B.Bhagavanth Kumar in November 2015 from the post of VC when he still had two years of tenure and it appointed the VC of Andhra University as the in-charge VC.

All these actions were done through Government Orders and all of them have violated law, he said. The Division Bench posted the case to February 29, 2016.
