High Court directs to give details of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

A Division Bench of Justices M.M.Sundresh and R.Mahadevan of Madras High Court directed the Apollo Hospital authorities to give information about the health condition of the Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa.

This following an urgent mention made by activist ‘Traffic’ K.R.Ramaswamy to take up his Public Interest Litigation to declare the ‘real’ status of the Chief Minister for Tuesday.

The High Court said that the people have the right to know the status of the Chief Minister’s health, since she is in a responsible position governing the affairs of the State, the Court observed. Accepting the contention of the Additional Advocate General on her health was a matter of privacy and it could not be made public, the Bench made the above observation. The AAG said that the hospital authorities were constantly giving updates through press releases. The hospital management might issue press releases but why did not the authorities provide the information to the public? They are duty bound to do this, the Bench said. The court said that thought it was not passing any order, the AAG should get instructions from the authorities.

The matter would be taken up on Thursday.
