HCU - Students JAC demand ‘Rohith Act’

The JAC for Social Justice in the presence of students and scholars from across the country demanded promulgation of a ‘Rohit Act’ on the lines of Nirbhaya Act. It may be recalled that Rohit Vemula a Ph.D student committed suicide on January 17. The students demanding sacking of two Union Ministers and VC. A national level JAC was constituted with a call to observe nation-wide protests until the demands were met. They also called for an all-India universities’ strike on January 27 as also a march to the Ministry of Human Resource.

Meanwhile, Radhika, mother of Rohit was admitted in ICU following she complained of chest pain. She was shifted from the protest camp. Rohit's uncle gave a statement to the police that Rohit's father was from Vaddera caste which is Backward and non schedule caste in Andhra Pradesh. Police officials, however, were not able to provide the name of the uncle. To compound the confusion, Vemula's mother asserted that she belonged to the scheduled castes.
