Former MP Chennupati Vidya passed away

Former Vijayawada MP Chennupati Vidya passed away here in the early hours of Saturday.

She was 84 and died of cardiac arrest at around 3.30am. according to their family members. She is survived by three daughters – Rashmi, Keerthy and Deeksha and a son Vazeer.

She was born to social reformers Goparaju Ramachandra Rao and Saraswathi Gora. She won among many awards, the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in recognition of her service to women and children at the grassroots level. She was married to Seshagiri Rao, a prominent transport operator in the region who was a pillar of support to her in realising her endeavours for as long as she lived.

She was elected to Lok Sabha twice from Vijayawada on Congress ticket in 1980 and 1989. She was affectionately called ‘Vidyamma’ by her employees and scores of others who would come to her seeking redress of their personal problems. As pledged by her, the family members donated her eyes to Swetcha Gora Eye Bank.
