Former MP and freedom fighter Singam Basavapunnaiah (91) passed away in a hospital in Guntur on Tuesday night. He has been fighting ill health for the past one year.
Basavapunnaiah was born in Modumudi village of Krishna district and became a lawyer by profession. He contested as a candidate of the Congress from the Tenali Parliamentary Constituency in 1989 and got elected besting his TDP rival Ummareddi Venkateswarlu. In subsequent parliamentary elections, he lost to TDP candidate and film actress Sarada. He was also close associate of Kasu Brahmananda Reddy and even served as MLC and pro-tem Speaker in united Andhra Pradesh.
Rajya Sabha Member KVP Ramachandra Rao condoled the death of Basavapunnaiah. APCC release expressed condolences to his family.
