Farmers’ Suicides-High Court seeks status report on creating panel

The Hyderabad High Court has asked the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State Governments to constitute a State-level farmers’ commission to prevent their suicides.

A Division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip Baba Saheb Bhosale and Justice S.V.Bhatt made the observation while hearing PILs field separately by Vyavasaya Jana Chaitanya Samithi, Pakala Srihari Rao and others challenging the inaction of the State governments in curbing the suicides.

Special Counsel for Telangana S.Sharth Kumar placed the suggestion made by intellectuals, agricultural scientists, petitioners and other stakeholders at a meeting by the Telangana State Government on farmers’ suicides. The bench expressed displeasure at the Andhra Pradesh State Government for not making an effort like Telangana government.

Seeks progress report on sand mining:
The Division Bench sought to know from these two governments about the progress on its suggestion to set up a high powered committee headed by a retired High Court judge to deal with complaints of illegal sand mining. The bench directed the authorities to stop illegal mining
