Death threats to Kanhaiya Kumar

Saturday, March 5, 2016

  • Purvanchali Sena announced a Rs. 11 lakh reward to anyone who shoots Jawaharlal Nehru Students' Union president Kanhaiya Kumar.
  • Posters announcing the reward were also erected in and around the national capital.
  • Few Sangh fringe elements had already threatened Kanhaiya Kumar with dire consequences.
  • Meanwhile, while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is desperately trying to divert the attention of the public, Union minister VK Singh also joined the bandwagon criticizing Kanhaiya Kumar. He also dragged the name of Rohith Vemula in this issue.
  • VK Singh alleged that Rohith Vemula had organized a meeting in support of Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon. He also criticized Kanhaiya Kumar for terming Rohith Vemula as his inspiration.
  • On March 4th, BJP Yuva Morcha (youth wing) leader Kuldeep Varshney announced Rs. 5 lakh prize money to anyone who cuts off Kanhaiya's tongue. The BJP district unit president Harish Shakya immediately expelled him for six years for making such a remark. BJYM president Anurag Thakur condemned the remark saying such language was not acceptable.
  • The Delhi Police registered a case in connection with the posters. A person was caught sticking the poster on behalf of Purvanchali Sena on the wall of the Delhi Press Club. The Delhi Police wrote to the administration of the Jawaharlal Nehru university to update them about the movements of Kanhaiya Kumar citing security concerns.
  • Amid the death threats, the Communist Party of India (CPI) approached the Union home ministry for high-grade security cover for Kanhaiya Kumar.
