DMK stalwart M. Karunanidhi passes away

The five time Chief Minister and DMK president for nearly 50 years M. Karunanidhi (94) died at 6.10pm today after eleven days battle due to age related ailments at the Kauvery Hospital here.

Leaders across the political circle led by President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to the DMK leader Dr.Aravindan Selvaraj, executive director of the hospital said that said that ‘despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond.

The Tamil Nadu government announced a public holiday on Wednesday and declared a seven day State mourning for the departed leader. The Central government announced cancellation of all official functions and a day’s mourning on Wednesday. The national flag will be flown at half mast on Wednesday.

As the news flashed, shops downed shutters and transport services were withdrawn. He is survived by wives Dayalu Ammal and Rajathi Ammal, children M.K.Muthu, M.K.Alagiri, M.K.Stalin, M.K.Tamilarasu and daughter Selvi and M.Kanimozhi .

DMK working president M.K.Stalin today night called upon cadre to maintain peace following the death of the party president and not damage the reputation of the departed patriarch. In a statement he said ‘Maintain peace and do not earn a bad name for him. Do not give any room for untoward incidents and cause inconvenience to the public. Do not damage public property’.
