DGP’s appointment is the State discretion

The Andhra Pradesh State government has brought an ordinance Andhra Pradesh (Reforms, Administrative) ordinance No.4-2017 on Tuesday.

With this, it is now the discretion of the State government to appoint the Director General of Police of its choice. It may be recalled that the list containing the names of five senior police officers that were returned back by the USPC on various grounds on several times . The State Cabinet has in its meeting on December 16 took a decision to the effect that the appointment of the DGP be the State's discretion and an ordinance has to be brought in. To this effect, an ordinance was brought out on Tuesday after the consent given by the Governor. With the ordinance, it paved way for the State to appoint the DGP of its own choice.

On the other hand, the present DGP Sambasiva Rao is retiring at the end of this month and the State has to appoint a new DGP. Sources said the names of RP Thakur, Gautam Sawang, Malakondiah are under consideration for the post.
