Boat overturns killing at least 12 tourists in River Krishna

In a tragic incident, a private boat carrying around 38 passengers overturned in Krishna River today evening.

According to sources, the boat was heading to Pavitra Sanghamam from Ibrahimpatnam Mandal Ferry Ghat when the unfortunate incident took place. The NRDF teams could rescue around 20 passengers while 12 passengers were died said sources. The rescue teams including expert divers were deployed to search the missing passengers.

Sources said that the administration has decided to continue the search operations with the help of powerful lights. The unfortunate incident took place when the boat was returning to Pavitra Sanghamam Ghat. Ibrahimpatnam MRO Intiyaz Basha said that they suspect overloading might be the reason for the mishap.

The expert divers could rescue four persons and were rushed to hospitals. There is every possibility of increasing the death toll. Majority of the passengers hails from Ongole. DGP N.Sambasiva Rao rushed to the spot while District Collector and Superintendent of Police are supervising the rescue operations. Chief Minister had spoken with the District Collector and enquired about the incident.

YSRCP chief and Leader of the Opposition YS Jagan who was in the Praja Sankalpa Yatra expressed deep shock over the incident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families.

updated news:: The boat belongs to ‘River Boating and Adventurers’ did not have any permissions and including fitness certificate. The new boat upon arrival without informing the concerned officials has started a trial run. The River Boating and Adventures had an agreement with the department of tourism to run their boats from Punnami Ghat to Bhavani Island. But the boat in violation had run it to Pavitra Sanghamam.

Death toll rises to 17:: In the unfortunate incident, as many as 17 persons reportedly killed. 32 persons belongs to walkers club of Ongole along with another six persons. The boat began its journey at around 4.20pm and reached near to Pavitra Sanghamam Ghat at around 5.10pm. Just within a couple of minutes to reach the Ghat, it overturned.

Search operations are on:: The rescue teams and expert divers are still searching for the missing persons. 14 bodies have been retrieved. There were no life jackets in the boat according to eye witness.

Immediately after the overturn of the boat, at about 5.15 information was passed on to 100. The YSRCP leaders including Kolusu Pardhasaradhi, Jogi Ramesh and Udaya Bhanu after receiving the information rushed to the spot within ten minutes. They had taken up the rescue operations. But sources said that the district administration reached the accident spot after 45 minutes of the incident.

District Collector Lakshmi Kantham, Vijayawada City Police Commissioner Gautam Sawang, DCP Kanti Rana and other officials reached the spot and supervised the rescue operations.
