At least 11 persons were reported to have been killed and several others were injured in a blast at a granite quarry near Hathi Belgal village in Alur mandal on Friday night at 9pm. Sources said that another 10 workers were missing.
Sources said that the quarry belongs to one Srinivas Chowdary belonging to TDP and his brother Suvash Chowdary is running the quarry. Villagers said that there were over 3000 electrical detonators, kgs of gun power, gelatine sticks and other explosive material were stocked. According to reports, the leakage of the gas cylinder and gradually caught fire to the detonators leading to the heavy explosion.
Police expect several others to be trapped under the burning debris. About ten houses in Hathi Belgal villages suffered severe damage and the tremors of the explosion were felt near 20 km away from the spot. Sources said that a lorry, three tractors and two sheds were gutted to fire.
The workers mostly migrant from Odisha were residing in the area and the death toll is expected to rise as many of them sustained 80% burns. Fire tenders have been rushed to control the fire. In the event of any heavy explosion, the information has to be passed on to the Revenue, mining, mine safety officials and also inform the nearby villagers. But in the instant case, nothing such took place.
The villagers rushed to the Alur police station and sat on the roads protesting against the incident. The YSRCP and CPI has demanded Rs.50 lakh as compensation to the kin of the family members. District Collector Satyanarayana expressed shock over the incident.
Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members. He directed the District Collector to speed up the rescue operations. `
