Beas River tragedy – Parents of engineering college students prefer to approach apex court

The Himachal Pradesh High Court directed the authorities to pay Rs.20 lakh to the kin of the college students who were drowned in Beas River.

Parents of the 24 engineering college students were disappointed with the High Court directive to pay Rs.20 lakh compensation prefers to approach Supreme Court demanding higher penalty for the college management.

It may be recalled that the engineering students of V.N.R.Vignan Jyothi Engineering College who had drowned during their picnic were washed away as the Larji power project released water form the dam on June 8, 2014.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 2 had directed the State’s Electricity Board, management of the engineering and the State Government to share the compensation burden in the ratio of 60:30:10. As per the court order, the compensation amount will have to be paid to families of each of the victims.

The parents of some of the students’ expressed that the court took the matter serious but it is not the compensation that they want but criminal proceedings against the culprits.
