The district administration imposed a ban on new bore-wells in 67 villages which come under five mandals of Laveru, Ranathalam, Etcherla, Pondu and G.Sigadam where ground water was exploited indiscriminately in the last few years.
Permission for digging of borewells will not be given under these villages following ban under the Water, Land and Tree Act-2002. Several major panchayats such as Lakshmipura, Pydibhimavaram, Chilampeta Rajam and Boyapalem were affected in Ranasthalam mandal. The ban assumes significance in the Pydibhimavram which is the hub for industries in Srikakulam, Patryunivalasa, Venkatapuram, Tamada, Loglugu and other prominent villages have also come up in the red zone.
Srikakulam District Water Management Agency and other departments concerned were advised not to take new applications for Jalasiri scheme in the selected villages. The farmers who recently dug up wells just before the ban will not get electricity connections according to officials.
