Assam, Manipur and Punjab gets new Governors

The Union Government has today on Wednesday appointed new Governors for Assam, Manipur, Punjab and a Lieutenant Governor for Andaman Nicobar Islands.

Najma A. Heptulla who resigned last month from the Union Cabinet, has been appointed as the Governor of Manipur, replacing V. Shanmuganthan.

Banwarilal Purohit has been made the Governor of Assam, replacing Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya.

Punjab Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki has been replaced by VP. Singh Badnore.

Jagdish Mukhi has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Their appointments will be effective from the dates the incumbents assume charge.

  • Dr. Najma A. Heptulla who is appointed as Governor of Manipur was born on 13 April 1940 in Bhopal, Bhopal State, in present Madhya Pradesh to Syed Yusuf Ali and Fatima Yusuf Ali.She did her schooling from Motilal Vigyan Mahavidyalaya (MVM) Bhopal, and holds both a Masters' of Science Degree in Zoology, and a PhD in Zoology (Cardiac Anatomy) from Vikram University, Ujjain.She married Akbarali A Heptulla in 1966, and has three daughters. Her husband, Akbarali A Heptulla, a manpower consultant, was instrumental the establishment of the Patriot newspaper in the 1960s. He died on 4 September 2007, in New Delhi at the age of 75. She is a former vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and a five time member othe Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the Indian parliament, between 1986 and 2012, and Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha for sixteen years. She contested the 13th vice-presidential election held in August 2007 but lost to Hamid Ansari by 233 votes. She took oath as a cabinet minister in the Narendra Modi headed government on 26 May 2014. She is assisted by Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi who joined the Council of Ministers as a Minister of State in November 2014.
  • Bhanwarilal Purohit who was appointed as Governor of Assam State was a Member of Parliament from the Nagpur (Lok Sabha constituency) three times, twice as a Congress member, once as a BJP member. In 1984, he was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha as member of Congress Party. He was re-elected in 1989 on Congress ticket.Later he joined Bharatiya Janata Party when it launched a movement to build Ram Temple in Ayodhya, and contested Lok Sabha elections in 1991 as the party's candidate. But he lost to Datta Meghe of Congress. In 1996 he was elected to 11th Lok Sabha as BJP's candidate. In 2009 he again contested on BJP's ticket but lost the election to Vilas Muttemwar of Congress.Banwarilal Purohit gained ownership of the Nagpur daily newspaper The Hitavada in 1980s.   • V.P.Singh Badnore who was appointed as Governor of Punjab was born on May 12, 1948 to Th.Gopal Singh and Shrimati Rani Raj Kanwar at Badnore in Rajastan. He did his B.A (Hons), Business Management Educated at Mayo College, Government College, Ajmer and A.SC.I., Hyderabad. He is an Agriculturist/Farmer, Political and Social Worker, Sportsperson, Environmentalist. He was a Mmber of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly during 1977-80, 1985-90,1993-98. In 1998-99, he was the Cabinet Minister for Irrigation, Government of Rajasthan. He was the MP during 1999-2000, Member on Energy and Defence and Convenor of its Sub-Committee on Action Taken Report 2001, Convenor, Sub-Committee on Electricity Bill, 2001, Convenor, Sub-Committeee on Nuclear Energy 2001-2002 Member Joint Paliamentary Committee on Stock Market Scam 2001-2003.   • Jagdish Mukhi who was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was born on December 1, 1942 in Dajal, Dera Gazi Khan. He is a former minister of Finance, Planning, Excise and Taxation and Higher Education in the Delhi government. He is a member of BJP and RSS. He has been teaching as reader in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University. He launched Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in the record time of 8 months (as Minister of Higher Education). He was awarded as best planning minister of the nation by the then Union planning minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee. Two times he was awarded with best MLA award in Delhi Vidhan Sabha. He was representing Janak Puri constituency continuously from 1980 and has won seven continuous Vidhan Sabha elections from the same constituency but lost the election in 2014. He has worked at all levels in the BJP & given the best performance as President, BJP Mandal Janak Puri; General Secretary, BJP West District; President, BJP West District; General Secretary, BJP Delhi; Prabhari, BJP affairs Jammu & Kashmir; Prabhari BJP affairs Haryana. His performance was best appreciated in Lok S abha & Vidhan sabha elections of Haryana where BJP has got results to the best ever performance and first time in Haryana BJP chief minister without any support has taken the oath.
