Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former MLA S.Somu shot dead by Maoists

Araku MLA and Government Whip Kidari Sarveswara Rao was shot dead by Maoists today a few hours ago.

He died on the spot. The Maoists also shot at the former MLA Siveri Somu who was also killed. The unfortunate incident took place at Dammriguda mandal Lipittiputti. Sources said that some of the followers have also sustained injuries.

The MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao was elected on YSRCP ticket in 2014 general elections and defected to TDP. He is survived by his wife and two sons. Visakhapatnam Rural SP Rahul Dev confirmed the death of the MLA. He is in the hit list of the Maoists and posters with such threats were also seen said sources. Around 50 women Maoists have participated in the operation. He was shot at when he was going to his quarry mining at a close range.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu who is in foreign tour after knowing the news expressed his condolences.

Sources said that the both were travelling in two cars to the village to attend a gram darsini organized by the local administration. Around 11am, Maoists stopped the car, surrounded them and forced the leaders to get down. The weapons from there personal security officers accompanying the leaders were taken away even before they react. The leaders were taken away a few paces ahead after their hands were tied. A few minutes later, they were shot dead at point blank range.

  • High alert sounded::* The police sounded high alert in the State and on the borders following the killing of Araku MLA and former MLA. Chief Minister called on the District Collector of Visakhapatnam and SP over phone and enquired about the incident. Additional DG (Law and Order) and in charge DGP Harish Kumar Gupta rushed to Visakhapatnam and reviewed the situation. Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar directed the Collectors and the SPs to provide protection for the public representatives.
