Anantapur:: Five people died when lightning struck the shed they were taking shelter in near Kalugodu village of the Gummagatta mandal of the district on Sunday evening. The deceased were identified as Karim (26), Obanna (30), Jayanna (50), Giri Reddy (35) and Sivappa (24). Four others stood close by them were injured and were shifted to Government general hospital where their condition is said to be stable.
Viziangaram:: I Town Police Station Circle Inspector P.Sobhan Babu was caught redhanded and arrested by the ACB while he was allegedly accepting Rs.3 lakh from realtor Erra Eswara Rao of Thotapalem today. Inidentally, the CI has arrested two home guards Burle Srinivas and B.lakshmana Rao on the charge of kidnapping the realtor on the night of Friday from his home at Thotapalem and handing over to Anni Srinivasa Rao, another realtor of Anandapuram. Eswara Rao, in a complaint to the CI said Srinivasa Rao with the assistance of the home guards in police uniform forced him to transfer all his assets in his name. The CI allegedly demanded Rs.5 lakh from Eswara Rao to get back his assets. As part of first instalment, he paid him Rs.2 lakh. On further demand of Rs.3 lakh, Eswara Rao complained to DGP(ACB) R.P.Thakur who deployed a Central team and caught the police inspector while he was accepting the money.

Information and Public Relations Minister Kaluva Srinivasulu has sought to know why YSRCP leaders are silent on the open letter of TDP State president Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao to Jagan Mohan Reddy. He said that Jagan Mohan Reddy was silent on the nine questions posed by Kala Venkata Rao. If his meeting with the PP was only for the welfare of the people of the State, why was it kept a secret until the meeting was over, he asked. Why were the YSRCP leaders maintaining silence, he wondered.
Tirumala:: Pilgrims will henceforth have an opportunity to watch more devotional programmes on the big screens inside the Vaikuntam queue complex while waiting for darshan of Lord Venkateswara Swamy. A direction to this effect was issued on Sunday by the TTD EO Singhal who paid a surprise visit to the complex along with deputy JEP Pola Bhaskar. He directed the PRO to submit a comprehensive report on the quality of food being served in the darshan lines, cleanliness and other facilities.
Kurnool:: The police intercepted a lorry near Peaplly in the district and seized 22 tonnes of subsidized rice being illegally transported to Karnataka. A team led by Inspector seized 440 bags of rice when the driver could not produce the relevant documents. The vehicle and the consignment were handed over to the Tahsildar officer.
