Amendments made to registration of marriage

The State Assembly passed the AP Compulsory Registration of Marriages (Amendment) Bill 2018 on Tuesday.

The Minister for Women and Child Welfare Paritala Sunitha said there was a need for effective integration of the field level functionaries of rural and urban local bodies designated as marriage officers under the AP Compulsory Registration of Marriage Rules, 2003. Accordingly, it had been decided to amend the Act 202 suitably, she said.

Government whip Kuna Ravi Kumar pointed out that village secretaries were refusing to issue marriage certificates to the Chandranna Pelli Kanuka beneficiaries for various reasons such as marriage was not performed under their jurisdiction. He also said age of the bride and groom must be verified as it was a practice to performance early marriage in some communities.
