Bank employees across the country will go on one day strike on July 29 in protest against the move of the government to privatize public sector banks and banking reforms.
The decision to go on strike was taken at a meeting of the United Forum of Bank Unions in Hyderabad. Nine frontline unions representing the bank employees and officers are constituents of the Forum. Bank Employees’ Federation of India general secretary (AP and Telangana) P.Venkataramaiah said in a press release sought the support of the public for the strike. He said that the government intended to privatize public sector banks and allow it to control of corporate houses and big houses. He alleged that in the name of consolidation, the government is proposing to merge the Public Sector Banks and create five or six large size banks. He said that in the guise of cleaning balance sheets and reducing NPAs, the precious savings of common people and hard earned profits of the banks were lost.
