Saturday, March 11, 2017

Agitations are going on against the Divis Laboratories unit proposed over 125 acres spread over Tatiakulapalem and Pampadipeta villages of Thondangi mandal with an investment of Rs.500 crore.

It may be recalled that the Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu has announced on the Floor of the Assembly that the officials have convinced residents on construction of the unit while the ground reality is otherwise.

Small and marginal farmers fear loss of livelihood and environmentalists express concern over violation of norms. The Divis unit has acquired 60 acres but reportedly constructed a compound wall in the entire extent of 125 acres and started denying access to the farmers even before they parted with their land holding. The CPI(M) and YSRCP are leading the agitation promising people that they will stand by them till the government shelves the project.

Police file non-bailable cases:: According to sources, the police has arrested over 800 agitators in 12 spells in the last six months and registered non-bailable cases against five activists of the CPI(M). Meanwhile, CPI (M) alleges that the CRZ norms are violated. According to it, the proposed project is within 100 metres from the sea coast which is a violation of the Coastal Regulatory Zone norms. The promoters are not supposed to use the forest land prior to its de-notification said T.Patanjali Sastry, an environmentalist.
