Aadhaar card made mandatory for MGNREGS works

According to reliable sources, the government had made Aadhaar Card enrollment for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) works from April 1, 2017.

However, till an Aadhaar card is obtained, ration card, driving licence, voter identity card, Kisan passbook with photo, job card issued under MGNREGS and a certificate issued by a Gazetted officer or a Tehsildar will be admissible as proof of identity to get the benefits. Those who applied for Aadhaar can produced their enrolment slip or a copy of the application for getting the unique identification number.

The Centre invokes section 7 of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and other Subsidies, Benefits and services) Act, 2016 that mandates the government when gives subsidy, benefit or service from the Consolidated Fund of India. An individual can be asked to undergo authentication or furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar card.
