Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced in the Union Budget 2016 that the government will give five crore LPG connections to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families at a concessional rate till 2018-19. He announced that these connections would be given in the name of women members of poor households. He said that he had set aside a sum of Rs.2,000 crore in this budget to meet the initial cost of providing these LPG connections. Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan speaking to media said that it will provide a concession of Rs.1,600 to over five crore BPL families to get cooking gas connections in next three years. A single cylinder LPG connection costs Rs.3,400.
