As many as 57 persons including four children were killed on Tuesday morning when a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation bus plunged into a gorge while its way from the Kondagattu temple.
Sources said that at least 43 persons including the driver died on the spot. The others succumbed to injuries at the Jagtial area hospital and Karimnagar district headquarters hospital where they were rushed. The bus was carrying 100 people when it is meant for 54 passengers set it off from Shanivarampet village to Jagtial town. From the temple shrine, it took the ghat road. As the bus reached the last curve on the ghat road, it hit an autorickshaw and the driver lost control when he attempted to avoid a direct hit and plunged into a ten metre deep gorge.
District Collector A.Sharat, Superintendent of Police Sindhu Sharma and Karimnagar Commisioner of Police V.B.Kamalasan Reddy rushed to the spot and supervised the rescue operations.
