24 persons including children were killed as boat capsizes in the River Ganga

According to sources, 21 persons including minors were killed as a boat capsized in Ganga Ghat in Patna. At the time of the accident, there were 40 persons on the board that overturned due to overloading.

Divers who were rushed have so far recovered 24 bodies and the search is on for the missing persons. Six persons have been rescued and were admitted at the Patna Medical College and Hospital. The boat might have capsized either due to overloading or mid-water collision with another boat according to Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal.

People had gathered at Ganga Diara to witness a three day kite festival that is being held every year on the eve of Makara Sankranti. Over 75,000 people have gathered at the venue.

Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi expressed grief on the loss of lives and expressed condolences to the families of the bereaved. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs.2 lakh to the next kith and kin of the deceased and Rs.50,000 to those who were injured.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a probe into the incident. The CM has also instructed Principal Secretary of Health RK Mahajan and the Patna District Magistrate to ensure proper treatment of the victims of the boat tragedy. He announced an ex-gratia of Rs.4 lakhs to the kin of those killed.
