The one-man judicial commission by former Allahabad High Court Judge A.K.Roopanwal appointed by Union HRD ministry to probe into the circumstances that led Rohit Vemula’s suicide at Hyderabad Central University this year said that he did not belong to SC community.
Sources said that Justice Roopanwal has submitted his report to the University Grants Commission in the first week of August. The question of caste status on Rohit came following Union Ministers Sushma Swaraj and T.Gehlot questioned the student’s caste identity while both of the Ministers said that the scholar belonged to Vaddera community- a caste that falls under OBC category and his suicide was projected as an issue of caste discrimination to fuel tempers.
It may be recalled that Ph.D student Rohit Vemula of HCU commits suicide in January 2016 by hanging himself in his hostel room.
