Andhra Pradesh welcomed the new Millenium 2000 with passion and pride - and now welcomes 2001 with equal warmth. This year saw Andhra Pradesh developing in all walks of society - Political, Social and Economic fronts.
Led by its dynamic Chief Minister, Sri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh has entered into the map of World Software Map. A trip to Singapore, China, Korea and Japan - Andhra Pradesh has learnt much more than exchanging of "computer brains" and "economic reforms".
The year also marked the beginning of many Power and Tourism projects - development of ports and harbour's in the state. The Second Phase of Hitech City at Hyderabad attracted more investment opportunities in the state. The then President of the United States of America - Mr. Bill Clinton himself visited the place and expressed his wish for Hyderabad to be a leading Software Center. The State Government has also taken up the initiative of development of Information Technology and the result was the Satellite Link Facility at Software Technology Part at VEPZ, Visakhapatnam. Tourism was another area, the Government choose to earn good revenue and many tourist spots were spotted out and plans were chalked out for their development. Silparamam was in particularly being concentrated. The recent Visakha Utsav and World Telugu Conference at Visakhapatnam took the focus spotlight to the City of Destiny - Visakhapatnam.
There are some up's and downs aswell on the Politics arena - 66 MLA's belonging to the Congress, Left and MIM were suspended and Congress leaders sat on an indefinite strike for quiet some time. Meanwhile, the cyclone hit the state - drowning many parts of the state - and the highlight of the year is that submersion of Hyderabad. Water has arrested people to move out of their towns in the twin cities and the Government was back into action - providing emergency care and relief operations.
Meanwhile, another problem struck the Government - a necessity to increase the power tariff in the state. And the opposition is back into action - Congress lead by its powerful leaders such as Sri Rajasekhar Reddy, Sri Rosayya, Sri Satyanarayana and many others along with leaders from CPI and other Left parties such as Mr. Sudhakar Reddy and others raised their opposition to the Governments decision. The Government was unmoved with the effect yet people felt the difficulty of paying the hiked charges.
Malleswari highlighted the pride of Andhra Pradesh on the World Arena with her lone medal for India.
Education sector saw quiet good developments and students thanked for the smooth conduction of various exams and the outcome of their results - SSC, Intermediate and the Engineering and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) Examinations were well conducted and on schedule. Added to this, the Business School at Hyderabad was recognised as an Internation school while IIIT stood at top as the best Infotech Education center in India.
AP lost Sakhi - the tiger that was killed by poachers at Nehru Zoological park in Hyderabad. News was raised at many places in the state which stated that the security at Zoos and Natural Sancturies was not up to the mark.
Renowned TDP leader and Minister Mr. Madhava Reddy was killed by Naxals and the mysterious murder of Human rights activist Sri Purushottam. The state also lost Sri Veerareddy - TDP member and a Minister from Cuddapah. There were fierce battles (encounters) between the Police and the Naxals of Peoples War Group - either of the teams lost many of their members in the process though Police say Naxals have realised the current situation and have been surrendering. The War wasn't over and there is no solution for this in the near future either.
