Hyderabad, September 11, 2008

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi addressing a massive gathering of women at Tirupati on Thursday showered accolades on the way the SHGs were ushering in a silent revolution in the State and expressed confidence that poverty would be a thing of the past in the city if the women continued to work with the same spirit and determination. She said that Andhra Pradesh had become a role model for the entire country in the SHG movement.

She disbursed bank loans and subsidies to the tune of Rs.150 crore to the women of SHGs under the 'Indira Kranti Patham'. Appreciating the progress made by the SHGs in the State, she said leaders from abroad particularly women were keen on knowing details of the scheme so that it could be replicated in their countries. Sonia Gandhi patted the State Government for launching 'Indira Bheema Pathakam', a first of its kind life insurance scheme covering 80 lakh rural people and handed over a cheque for Rs.50 crore to LIC Chairman and Managing Director, Raghavan.

She charged the TDP government for deliberate closure of th Chittoor Cooperative Dairy to promote a private dairy. She said that it was Dr.YS Rajasekhara Reddy government that revived the dairy and breathed life into the dairy farmers of the district. The milk produced in Chittoor was now reaching the households in Delhi through the Government run Balaji Dairy. She announced that the Central Government would spend Rs.2,000 crore for the development of the town including up gradation of the railway station and airport to International standards besides linking heritage corridor linking 17 temples in and around the temple town.
