Rajahmundry - East Godavari, March 8, 2008The Rajahmundry MP Vundavalli Arun Kumar tendered apology to Dalits publicly and even touched the feet of Dr.Ambedkar's statue. He declared that he is a staunch supporter and follower of the Constitutional framer Dr.BR Ambedkar. On February 23, he made some remarks against Dr.Ambedkar in Municipal Council meeting and later apologized in Delhi.
Dalit associations continued their protests for the last 15 days demanding a public apology in Rajahmundry and started a hunger strike. On Saturday evening, Arun Kumar along with Amalapuram MP GV Harsha Kumar, Cabinet Ministers G Surya Rao, P Subashchandra Bose and MLA R Suryaprakasa Rao reached Dr. Ambedkar statue near Gokavaram bus stand where hundreds of Dalits assembled from the morning. There was a heavy deployment of police to avoid any untoward incident.
The MP Arun Kumar tendered an apology to the Dalits assembled there and said he would not have been here but for the Fundamental Right of Speech guaranteed by the Constitution drafted by Dr. BR Ambedkar and said that he never spelt any wrong word knowingly or unknowingly.
