140 candidates barred from contesting civic polls

State Election Commission took the decision

Hyderabad, March 28, 2008

Nearly 140 candidates who lost the election to the office of ward members of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in September 2005 have been disqualified from contesting any election for three years for any office under the provisions of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act, 1955.

The State Election Commission took this decision on the ground that the 140 candidates had failed to submit final accounts of election expenses to the office of ward members of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation despite several reminders to them.

The order that issued yesterday said that the contesting candidates have to file expense accounts within 45 days from the date of declaration of results and the deadline had expired on November 9, 2005.
