Congress senior leaders lash out Purushottam Reddy

Leaders say he betrayed the cause of Telangana

Hyderabad, March 22, 2008

Sharp difference surfaced among the senior leaders of Congress from Telangana on Saturday over the indefinite postponement of their proposed public meeting at Bhongir on March 24 to bring pressure the Congress party high command. The Telangana Regional Development Board Chairman Vuppunuthala Purushotam Reddy received flak from other party senior leaders for announcing on Friday that the Bhongir rally was put off.

According to reliable reports, the party leaders said that he had betrayed the cause of Flanagan. Purushotam Reddy challenged Congress Working Committee member G Venkataswamy to quit the Lok Sabha and seek the people's mandate again. He said that on his part, he was prepared to quit the MLA post and seek re-election if Venkataswamy picked up the gauntlet.

At a press conference, he termed as false and far from truth. He claims that the decision to defer the meeting at Bhongir was taken without Venkataswamy's consent. He added that Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi telephoned him and asked postponement of the Bhongir meeting and he conveyed the same to Venkataswamy. After returning from New Delhi, other senior Congress leaders who held confabulations at Venkataswamy's house and declined to divulge details of the three hour long meeting. They said that the Core Committee's report was not up to their expectations and Purushotam Reddy should have waited till the high command communicated the details of the proceedings.
