Begampet airport go on flash strike
Hyderabad, March 21, 2008The members of the Airport Authority Employees Union and Air Corporation Employees' went on a flash strike today afternoon opposing the closure of the Begumpet Airport and refusing to work under the Singapore Air Traffic Services at the new airport at Shamshabad. As a result, the departure of Air India Flights IC 618 bound to Mumbai, IC 941 to New Delhi, IC 948 to Chennai and IC 977 to Muscat was delayed by one hour.
Airport Director RK Singhla claimed that all flights were running as per schedule and the strike had no impact on services. Jet Airways' was helping in loading, offloading and other operations. Four platoons of police led by Begampet ACP Ramdas were deployed at the airport.
Union leaders accuse the civil Aviation Minister of going back on the promise to utilize the Begum pet airport for non commercial operations and to set up a committee to look into their demands within a week of reaching an agreement with them.
