UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to take decision on Telangana

Senior Congress leaders of Telangana on Congress Core Committee agenda

Hyderabad, March 20, 2008

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today gave one hour long hearing with the senior party leaders from Telangana. The veteran politicians had threatened to hold a meeting on Bhongir on March 24. According to sources, Sonia Gandhi assured them that the Telangana issue would be discussed at the party's core committee meeting tomorrow. Nonetheless, the seniors have not deferred the Bhongir meet and instead they kept up the rhetoric saying that a decision would be taken on the same depending on the outcome of the core committee meeting.

The Senior leaders led by G Venkataswamy met Sonia's political secretary Ahmed Patel and Defence Minister AK Anthony separately for nearly half an hour each and explained the ground reality to both of them. Even though they have not been able to extract a categorical assurance from Sonia Gandhi, they appeared happy just the same. For They, have forced her to grant them reasonable time to put across their point of view.

The leaders explained her that the Bhongir meeting is neither against the party nor the party leadership. They said that till now she was listening to only one side of the story and today they explained the other side also, they commented. Telangana Regional Development Board chairman V Purushotham Reddy said in Delhi that the Telangana issued cannot be settled overnite and it is possible only if the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi wills. He further said that everyone in Telangana will be happy from tomorrow onwards.
