Andhra Jyothy Editor and journalists arrested

Arrested on charges for hitting a poster of Mandakrishna Madiga slippers

Hyderabad, June 24, 2008

The Editor of the Newspaper - Srinivas and two other journalists - Srinivas and Vamsi of a leading telugu daily - Andhra Jyothy - are arrested on charges of hitting a poster of Mandakrishna Madiga slippers and burning an effigy.

The arrest was made by the Police after a case was registered under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Sources say police have taken the necessary legal opinion and permission to make the arrest. Police in large numbers congregated at the Jubliee Hills office of the newspaper. Senior police personnel met the Editor and Management of the newspaper. The Managing Director of the newspaper said he and his staff are ready to co-operate with the police but asked them to make the arrests tomorrow morning rather than tonight. The police however said they have to do their duty. The police went ahead with the arrest after getting clear instructions about the same. The arrested are taken to Jubilee Hills Police Station.

Andhra Jyothy says that this is one of the black day in the history of the Indian Press. The incident of the arrest of the Editor of a national daily in recent times is considered to be a big 'over reaction' by the police. The press community, while condemning the arrest, feels it is sad that the arrest, if at all is required, be done in the morning time and not after 8:00 PM. The press says the Editor of a newspaper is not a person who runs away overnight like a thief or a decoit and questions the necessity of the making the arrest at the closing hours of the day. Meanwhile, staff memebers of the newspaper office at Visakhapatnam began staging Rastha Rokho on the National Highway 5.
