Congress and TDP gains strength
Hyderabad, June 1, 2008
The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party received a set back in the by elections that ware held on May 29, 2008. The Party lost ten Assembly seats out of the 17 seats in the State Assembly and two of the four Lok Sabha seats. On the other side, the Congress and TDP have put up a strong show having won six and five Assembly seats respectively and one Lok Sabha seat each. The tally of the TDP includes Terlam seat in Coastal Andhra where it faced a token contest in the absence of a Congress nominee.
Soon after the announcement of the results, the TRS President K Chandrasekhara Rao caused flutter by making himself unavailable to the media. Rumors have come up that he is planning to quit the post. It may be recalled the TRS President asked the MLAs and MPs to resign from their posts to show his party grip over Telangana sentiment and teach the Congress a lesson for betraying the cause of Telangana. The by elections however showed a negative trend. He, himself narrowly avoided losing his Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat. The poor margin is only 15,765 votes that make him victory compared to the more than two lakh margin in 2006 by election.
TRS candidates drew a blank in Hyderabad losing deposits in two of the three seats in the Capital. While, the CPI, CPI(M) and BJP did not open their account anywhere. The by elections witnessed triangular fights with the TRS seeking votes on Telangana sentiment while the Congress on the development plank and the TDP on the ti-incumbency factor. However, the Congress and TDP also focused their campaign on the issue of the region's backwardness but stopped short of explicitly supporting separate Telangana.
